January 9, 2019 –<\/strong> The concept of a world without borders and global citizen is very enticing because it’s natural. But, humans have created a world with national borders and a whole host of distinctions. This has caused a lot of division, exclusion and conflict that had humans at their expense. From wars to refugee crises over human history, immigrants and borders have been in some ways helpful but in others, detrimental. Tackling this subject with heart, soul, and humanity is Laura Lavayen, via her novel Illegals: Stories of Immigrants. Can People be Illegal? Are Borders Necessary Today?<\/em><\/p>\n

The novel addresses a subject steeped in sensitivity and one that has always remained an issue to broach. Laura successfully weaved a story that touches sentiments of those that cross borders. She made the characters very raw, real and human. A typical situation bonds all the characters involved in immigration and different reasons for them to be considered “illegal”. They travel together up to the upshot of the novel. <\/p>\n

Laura Lavayen has mainly focused on workers who migrate with no other intentions than to work honestly and make a living, armed with grit and innocence that are often exploited, their naivety is taken advantage of in Illegals: Stories of Immigrants. Can People be Illegal? Are Borders Necessary Today?<\/em><\/p>\n

It must be noted that this novel is a work of fiction – out and out. The stories and intertwined characters resemble veracity, very closely. Laura Lavayen has written the novel in such a way people from any country, particularly immigration policies, problematic countries can relate to. Many people leave their home countries for various reasons – to work and provide a better life for their family back home, fleeing persecution, fleeing wars and whatnots. Ultimately, they have only one aim – to have a safe, stable and resourceful life where not only they can survive but thrive.<\/p>\n

About the author<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laura Lavayén is an American-Argentinean writer born in the touristic city of Bariloche, Argentina. She lived in Buenos Aires before coming to Philadelphia in 1965. She started writing at a tender age – her mother thought she was copying from magazines or books. In her twenties, Lavayén won a prize in a literary contest in Argentina with a short novel. In the United States, she published three novels during the ’70s and ’80s. This Loneliness (1974) is the first book she published in English. Now retired, she has written three nonfiction books and two fiction books – all published in English and Spanish: The Shadow of the Baron, Hello Buenos Aires. Chao Buenos Aires, Hello USA! Illegals, and Dogs, Owners of the City.<\/p>\n
