Los Angeles, CA – February 21, 2019 –<\/strong> MUBI<\/em><\/a> announces it will present the exclusive streaming premiere of Kazuhiro Soda’s ‘INLAND SEA’ globally beginning March 4th<\/sup>, and will also host a retrospective highlighting Soda’s filmography at Spectacle Theater.<\/em> <\/p>\n

MUBI will kick off its retrospective with a screening of INLAND SEA<\/em> on Saturday, March 2nd<\/sup> at 7:30pm, followed by a Q&A session with Soda. Additional films from Soda will be showcased at Spectacle Theater in Brooklyn, NY, and INLAND SEA<\/em> will also screen in Los Angeles, with the date to be announced shortly. <\/p>\n

“INLAND SEA <\/em>is, however, primarily a work of simple and unapologetic humanism, happily in love with people (‘We’re as we are,” one remarks’),” wrote The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From the renowned Japanese director and produced by Kiyoko Kashiwagi, INLAND SEA<\/em> (aka Minatomachi<\/em>) is an observational, black and white film that takes place in a small village, Ushimado, whose rich culture and close community have been deserted by the era of modernization in post-war Japan. Beloved by Japanese film director, Shohei Imamura, who set Black Rain<\/em> (1989) and Dr. Akagi<\/em> (1998) in Ushimado is now rapidly aging and in decline, as its ancient culture is on the verge of disappearing. INLAND SEA<\/em> documents the village’s remaining inhabitants – Wai-chan, the 86-year-old fisherman who dreams about retirement, Kumi-san, an 84-year-old villager who wanders the shores, convinced a social welfare facility stole her disabled son, and also, the “late-stage elderly” Koso-san, a widow and runner of a small seafood store, who sells fish to local townspeople, providing the stray cats with the leftovers.<\/p>\n
