The Origin Story of the Kaleidoscope Abelia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’ <\/strong>is a variegated branch sport of Abelia x grandiflora<\/em> ‘Little Richard.’ In layman’s terms this means that a Little Richard Abelia plant had a uniquely different branch. Right here in North Carolina, Kent Bell discovered this beautiful anomaly and got right to work on sharing it with the world. After some fancy horticulture things happened the Kaleidoscope Abelia<\/strong> was born!<\/p>\n

Abelia Kaleidoscope Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Kaleidoscope Abelia is a dwarf shrub<\/strong> that grows to about 2.5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. It is a variegated abelia <\/strong>that offers extraordinary color for the southern landscape and beyond. This compact plant has deep red stems and foliage that offers a virtual kaleidoscope of colors throughout the year. Spring leaves emerge green and yellow turning golden in summer. The cool weather of fall and winter bring out the height of this plant’s beauty with varying shades of green, yellow, red, and orange.<\/p>\n

Abelia Kaleidoscope Care<\/strong><\/p>\n

Plant Kaleidoscope Abelias<\/strong> any time of the year taking care to prevent transplant shock by avoiding extreme temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times of the year to plant, but areas with mild winters or mild summers can successfully plant abelias<\/strong> at that time. This shrub is recommended for USDA growing zones 6, 7, 8, and 9.<\/p>\n

The best color and blooming performance will be seen in plants grown in full sun. The Abelia Kaleidoscope<\/strong> is extremely adaptable to different soil types, but fertile, well drained soil is ideal.<\/p>\n

Water glossy abelias<\/strong> deeply when newly planted and about twice weekly for the first few months. Once established, this abelia is drought tolerant. We recommend watering once weekly during extended periods of dry, hot weather for best results. Feed abelia bushes<\/strong> in early spring with a balanced slow release fertilizer.<\/p>\n

There is no pruning needed for this dwarf abelia<\/strong>, but if desired reserve heavy pruning for winter. Light trimming can be done anytime of the year.<\/p>\n
