The Senator’s Daughters (Breaking Unity Series) by J.C. Graham is a political thriller and book one of the series. The US government is bankrupt and the country is falling apart. People are not receiving their welfare checks, public housing is falling into disrepair and tensions are rising within the civilian population. California, keen for independence, votes to secede from the Union and forms the Army of the Republic of California. Anna, Sophie, and Amber are the daughters of Senator Jenkins. They each have their own lives, families, and problems which become increasingly precarious as secession is forced upon them. The Senator and his daughters end up on very different sides of the divide. For the Senator there is a fine line between being a father and serving the federal government, the latter increasingly taking priority, but with dreadful consequences.<\/p>\n

J.C. Graham has written a gripping family drama set against a backdrop of political and civil unrest, where ordinary people get caught up in an extraordinary situation. All the characters were realistically portrayed and I found them very engaging. I particularly liked Sophie’s storyline where she was torn between her soldier husband, who battles for Californian independence, and her powerful, politically motivated father, a Senator who is part of the very fabric of the establishment. The Senator’s Daughters is an intriguing and appealing novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am so glad this isn’t a stand-alone book as there is great potential to develop the story further. I really look forward to reading more from this author.”<\/p>\n
